Lakey Peak ~ East SumbawaOverview of Lakey's
Located on the island of Sumbawa east of Bali, Lakey peak is rarely visited by other westerners other than surfers, it is a small area of coast with a good concentration of high quality waves with plenty of basic accommodation, it is kind of one of those places, that is paradise to some and surf slum to others.
The Waves
Lakey
peak is one of the most popular budget surfing
areas in Indonesia, as the area has
a variety of good quality consistent surf spots located in
a small area, with most accessible by foot, waves are
generally hollow with power although the reefs they
break over are not as sharp and shallow as many other
areas in Indonesia.
One other thing that
should be noted about the waves here is during the
year when SE trade winds blow at there strongest,
normally early morning till 10 or
11 is best,
conditions for the rest
of the day can then become cross-to-onshore, with
often a afternoon glass off.
Crowd wise
Like most areas in Indonesia Lakey's can get very crowded, although like most areas outside of Bali crowds numbers fluctuate dramatically throughout the year and strangely enough large numbers of surfers come and go at similar times often leaving windows of low crowds, when you would not expect.
The four main waves are
|
Lakey peak- The
main focus of the area straight out the front from
most of the camps a right and left hand peak often
packed with punch and power, depending on the day
often depends on
what is best,
generally the left is the longer and the more surfed
wave offering some great sections and nice round
barrels, the right is generally shorter
but can be even more hollow but often closes
out on a shallow end section.
Both the left and
right when small are normally high performance wave's
with a few barrels while with solid overhead conditions
both waves are full barrels.
Across the channel west is also an area of reef called no mans rarely surfed a very heavy right on shallow reef.
Lakey pipe- Is
often favored by the body boarding crew, and
offers a slabbing left ledge not the longest wave
but offers up a solid barrel.
Nungas- Nungas
has two personality's when small it is the more
mellow option in the area fairly average lefts by
Indo standards wall up and breaks in a number of section
down the reef, while on a big swell Nungas is a big wave
left breaking for
some distance.
Periscopes- One
of the best rights east of Bali, a wave of good
length with a variety of sections, including some
hollow bowly inside sections, a little more fickle
than the other main waves, often rippable when small,
but powerful and hollow when solid.
Other Waves-There
is also a few other waves both east and west both
lefts and rights, working on a variety of
conditions normally reached
by motorbike or fast boat.
Lakey peak surf camps/Resorts
Lakey
peak has quite a few accommodation choices,
these are mostly budget losmens/surf camps that
provide accommodation only and meals at an extra cost or
meals can be bought at one of the other
places.
Most of the
losmens/surf camps don't have web sites and can
either be booked from Bali or turn up and shop around
prices range from about $10+ pp pn most places
have option of A/C or fan.
Amagati hotel lakey peak- Located
directly in front of the peak, this is perhaps the
most upmarket option in the area, although in
western terms it's still very much budget and
basic, from $18 to $30 pp pn or www.hotelamangati.com

Charter boats that focus on Lakey peak area:
Charter boats don't focus on Lakey peak however some charters occasionally pass through the area.
#Note The
area that surrounds lakey's is very poor, there have been
many reports of theft and you need to be ever mindful
of this by not leaving things
on the beach while surfing etc.
