Mainland South Sumatra ~ (krui)
Overview of South sumatra
South Sumatra is located in the south area of the main island of Sumatra one of the largest islands in the world, the area of interest to surfers is an area of remote coastline of about 100km in the Lampung province. Generally speaking apart from surfers there is very little other tourism although the area backs onto some great national parks where rare animals in the wild such as tigers and elephants still roam.
The Waves
Unlike many areas in Indonesia where the swell often wraps around an Island or peninsula, most of the waves in South sumatra are exposed to the full brunt of the open ocean and are more raw, thick and chunky in nature, although off course there are exceptions to this such as the long walls of Karang nyimbor and the area in Krui.
Crowd wise
There is a fair amount of misinformation about crowds in South sumatra, here is the facts, there is now a large number of losmens/surf camps at "Karang Nyimbour/Ujung bocur" and like anywhere in Indonesia from April to September the point can get crowded especially in the months of june/july/August. other waves in the area are more hit and miss, crowded one day empty the next, see each wave description for more on crowds.
#Also of note in the
near future flights to Krui from Jakarta with Susi
air are rumored to commence, which may add another
factor to crowds, changing the travel time from Jakarta from
about 6-9 hours to an estimated 30-45 minutes.
South Sumatra surf spots
Karang nyimbor/Ujung bocur- The
most consistent spot and the main wave of focus in
South sumatra, Karang nyimbour/Ombak bocur is a very
long left, that changes with mood depending on swell
size, direction and tide, perhaps not world class
it's mostly a fun rippable left with wally sections, peeling
section's crumbling lips and a few barrels thrown in the mix.
Although it's not
a barrel from start to finish like many waves in
Indonesia, it is a fun reliable
wave that just about any surfer can have fun on and
what it lacks in
quality it makes up for in
consistency breaking in just about any condition,
swell direction and size tide etc.
It must also be
noted once this was a fairly un crowded wave however
over the last few years a number of losmens/surf camps
have popped up on the point and
as a result can get crowded, although like many spots in
Indonesia if you time it right, you can often get uncrowded
sessions.
Way Jambu(Sumatran pipe)- Not
as consistent as Karang nyimbor but when on is a
world class left offering, multiple tube sections and
thick lips suited to better surfers.
Bali village-left and rights reefs when smaller.
Mandiri- Yes
a beachie in Indonesia, like any beach sand banks
changes from day to day week to week, but generally
Mandiri is a high quality hollow peaky beachie and
possibly one of the best, if not the best beachie in
Indo, best surfed early before the wind gets up.
The peak- Located
in front of a secret sumatra surf camp, picture
perfect peak breaking over a shallow reef , the wave
is mostly a right and throws out a barrel from take
of to end, looks great in photo's although in reality
the waves is extremely short, and it can be a
frustrating and hard wave to surf
stand up but a perfect wave for body
boarders.
Krui left- When
on a quality left of average length offering some
nice sections and a few barrels, suitable to most
surfers, only negative is it needs a solid swell to
get waves so normally is very small and inconsistent it can
also get crowded due to it being a fun little
wave and the fact when it does break most other spots
are to big for the average joe.
Krui right- Another
quality wave although rather short offers a good
barrel from start to finish over
reef and sand, also needs a very solid/big swell to start
breaking and can get crowded easily due to the same reasons
as Krui left.
Banana island(P. Pisang)-A hollow powerful right and very heavy left break off either end of the island.
Jenny's/Drew's-Quite
a drive north from krui area is a fun right reef,
not the longest or most perfect wave, but
it does offer a few good sections and is
suitable for all levels of surfers, best early
morning or in wet season, crowds here are hit and
miss.
Honey smacks/walur- Hollow thick, chunky left, suited to body boarders and experienced surfers.
Jimmy left and right- Two
waves in this area a left off the south point and a
right in the north end, both are heavy and hollow
waves and only for experienced surfers.
Other waves-
Above are the main waves however the area also has a
few other waves that are generally more fickle
reefs/ledges and beachie's.
